Zheng He was born into an adventurous Muslim family in Yunnan.  Both his grandfather and father had made pilgrimages to Mecca, hence held in high regard by the local community. He began to receive knowledge of navigation and oceans from his father at a very young age, and became attracted towards ocean navigation.
